More hospitals will attend natural births
The Catalan health authorities will increase the number of hospitals that attend natural births to seven.

Televisió de Catalunya

29/03/2007

The Department of Health is finalising plans so that by the end of this year at least seven hospitals around Catalunya are prepared for attending natural births. At present there are just two hospitals in Catalunya that offer this service: Santa Caterina in Salt and the Maternitat in Barcelona.

In a natural birth the physiological process is respected, without medication or instrumental interventions, as long as the mother does not need either. According to statistics from the Department of Health, between 2005 and 2006, 600 natural births were carried out in Catalunya, which counts for approximately 1% of all births, but demand is increasing. Many families now ask for natural birth and more and more professionals are asking to be able to offer this service.
